Food Boxes: Food-Safe, Packaging for Every Food Category

✔ FDA Food-Safe Materials  |  ✔ All Food Categories  |  ✔ PFAS-Free Options  |  ✔ No Minimum Order  |  ✔ Free Design + Free USA Shipping

Food packaging in the United States operates under more scrutiny than almost any other consumer product category. The materials that touch or come near food must meet FDA food contact standards. The inks and coatings used for printing must be non-toxic and migration-tested. And increasingly, the materials themselves must navigate a growing patchwork of state-level PFAS bans, Extended Producer Responsibility laws, and consumer expectations around sustainability.

At Need Custom Packaging, we specialize in customized food boxes across the full range of food categories, from independent bakeries and food trucks ordering 50 units to retail food brands ordering 50,000. Our design team builds FDA compliance into every food packaging wholesale proof from the dieline stage, so your packaging meets current regulations and maximizes the brand space that remains available to you.

Texas-based food packaging specialists. We serve bakeries, restaurants, food trucks, meal prep companies, retail food brands, and CPG companies across all 50 states. FDA-compliant materials, food-safe inks, PFAS-free options, no minimum order, and free design support on every order.

Why Food Packaging Is Different From Any Other Category

Most packaging decisions are primarily about branding and protection. Food packaging adds a third mandatory dimension: food safety compliance. Every material that contacts food, the paperboard that forms the box, the ink printed on the surface, and the coating that provides grease resistance must meet FDA standards for food contact materials.

This is not theoretical. Brands that use non-compliant materials in food packaging guide face FDA enforcement action, retailer rejection at the distribution center level, and, most damagingly, consumer safety incidents that become brand-defining crises. The compliance requirement is not a formality. It is the starting point of every food packaging decision.

Food Packaging by Category: Complete Guide

Different food products require fundamentally different packaging specifications. Here is the complete breakdown across the eight primary food categories we serve:

Food Category  Typical Box Style  Material Needed  Key Requirement
Bakery & Pastry  Window carton, tuck-end, gable  14pt–16pt SBS or kraft  Grease-resistant, food-safe coating
Fast Food & QSR  Folding carton, gable, fry box  14pt SBS or kraft, wax-coated  Grease/heat resistance, fast assembly
Frozen & Cold Food  Tuck-end carton, sleeve  18pt SBS with moisture barrier  Moisture-vapor resistance, cold temp stability
Dry Goods & Snacks  Tuck-end, window box, display  14pt–16pt SBS or kraft  Dry barrier, retail shelf-ready
Organic & Natural  Kraft tuck-end, eco sleeve  Recycled kraft, PFAS-free SBS  FSC-certified, eco-label eligible
Specialty / Gourmet  Rigid box, sleeve, two-piece  18pt–24pt rigid stock  Premium finish, gift-worthy presentation
Meal Prep / DTC  Compartment carton, mailer  16pt SBS or corrugated  Shipping durability, portion separation
Retail Food / CPG  Retail folding carton, POP display  14pt–18pt SBS, FDA-compliant  Planogram fit, barcode-ready, retail codes

Bakery and pastry packaging

Bakery food packaging needs to be food-safe, grease-resistant, visually premium, and, for retail display, able to show the product through a window. SBS board in 14pt to 16pt is the standard material for most bakery applications. For artisan and organic brands, natural kraft board communicates handcrafted quality instantly.

Fast food and food service packaging

Fast food packaging has the most demanding functional requirements of any food box category: it must resist hot grease, maintain structural integrity when handled quickly by kitchen staff under time pressure, and be fast to assemble. Our fast food boxes use 14pt SBS with PFAS-free grease treatment and auto-lock or self-lock construction for rapid assembly.

Frozen and cold food packaging

Cold food packaging faces the moisture vapor challenge: as a frozen product thaws during distribution, moisture migrates through the packaging if it is not properly specified. Cold food boxes require higher moisture vapor transmission resistance (MVTR) than ambient-temperature food boxes. We specify 18pt SBS with moisture barrier coating for frozen food applications.

Dry goods and snack packaging

Dry goods packaging prioritizes retail shelf presence and barrier properties that keep moisture out. Window boxes are particularly popular in the snack and dry goods category, letting the product sell itself visually. Our dry food boxes use 14pt to 16pt SBS with excellent print surface for vibrant brand colors and retail-quality graphics.

Organic and natural food packaging

Organic and natural food brands have the most demanding packaging requirements in terms of material credentials: FSC-certified board, PFAS-free treatments, organic-compatible inks, and recyclable or compostable end-of-life options. We produce a full eco-friendly food box range using recycled kraft, PFAS-free SBS, and water-based coatings that meet organic brand positioning standards.

Premium and gourmet food packaging

Premium food brands, specialty chocolates, artisan condiments, and gift food sets require packaging that communicates luxury and justifies a premium price point. A rigid board with soft-touch lamination, gold foil stamping, and magnetic closure mechanisms is the premium food packaging toolkit. See our custom rigid boxes for premium food packaging applications.

Meal prep and DTC food shipping

Direct-to-consumer food businesses, meal kit delivery, specialty food subscriptions, and online gourmet shops need packaging that survives shipping while creating a premium unboxing experience at delivery. For DTC food packaging, we use corrugated or heavy SBS board for structural protection, with a black mailer box outer packaging for the branded presentation layer.

Food Safety Standards: What the Materials Mean in Practice

SBS board (Solid Bleached Sulfate)

SBS board is the most widely used food packaging material in the United States. It is FDA 21 CFR compliant, offers a bright white printing surface for vibrant color reproduction, and is available in a wide range of weights (14pt for lightweight applications, up to 24pt for premium packaging). All SBS board we use is sourced from food contact material standards.

Kraft paperboard

Unbleached kraft board is FDA-compliant for food contact, biodegradable, and recyclable without additional processing. The natural brown surface communicates sustainability effectively. Available in both virgin and recycled fiber grades. Our Kraft food boxes are printable with food-safe inks while maintaining the natural aesthetic.

PFAS-free grease resistance

Traditional grease resistance in food packaging was achieved using PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) coatings. Multiple U.S. states have now banned PFAS in food packaging (California, New York, and others), and more are following. Our standard food packaging uses PFAS-free grease resistance, meaning your packaging is compliant with current and forthcoming state bans without any specification change required.

Food-safe printing inks

The inks used for printing on food packaging must be food-safe and migration-tested, meaning they should not transfer chemicals to the food, either through direct contact or through packaging layers. We use food-grade, migration-tested inks on all food packaging. For packaging with direct food contact surfaces (like a box interior), we specify appropriate food-contact-approved coatings.

PFAS ban timeline: California’s ban on PFAS in food packaging took effect January 1, 2023. New York’s ban effective January 1, 2025. Several more states have enacted similar legislation for 2025–2027 compliance. If you are in a multi-state distribution channel, specifying PFAS-free food packaging now removes the compliance risk from your supply chain entirely.

Food Box Printing and Branding Options

Food packaging design has some of the most challenging constraints in packaging: the print area on a food box is often smaller than retail or luxury packaging, yet it needs to communicate FDA labeling requirements, ingredient information, allergen declarations, and brand identity simultaneously. Here is how we help food brands maximize their packaging design:

Full-color CMYK printing

Our standard food packaging printing reproduces your design with vibrant, food-safe color accuracy. Double-sided printing is available; the interior of a food box can carry your brand story, a recipe suggestion, a QR code, or promotional messaging.

Matte and gloss lamination

Matte lamination gives food packaging a premium, modern feel increasingly common in organic, artisan, and health food categories. Gloss lamination creates high-shine, retail-shelf impact effective for snack brands, confectionery, and any category where shelf standout is the primary visual goal.

Spot UV on logo elements

Spot UV applies a clear high-gloss coating to specific design elements, logo, brand name, and product hero image against a matte background. The contrast creates a visual premium signal that is especially effective for specialty and premium food brands.

Eco-friendly printing options

For brands with sustainability commitments, we offer soy-based and water-based inks that reduce VOC emissions compared to solvent-based alternatives. Combined with FSC-certified or recycled board, this produces a genuinely sustainable food packaging specification.

Why Food Brands Choose Need Custom Packaging

No minimum order: Food brands at every stage of development, from a home-based cottage food producer to a scaling retail CPG brand, have radically different volume needs. We serve both with the same food-safe materials, the same print quality, and the same design support.

Free design support with compliance awareness: Our design team is familiar with FDA labeling requirements across different food categories. When you submit a food packaging design, we check it against applicable labeling requirements before production begins, catching issues that would otherwise result in non-compliant packaging.

Texas-based, USA-focused: We are based in Missouri City, Texas, serving food businesses across all 50 states. USA-based production means faster turnaround, easier communication around compliance questions, and supply chain reliability that offshore suppliers cannot always match.
